A Collection of Mini Love Stories on Love that Never Was
Today I’m sharing three mini love stories involving love that never was.
The Risk of Dating You Was Too Great for Me
We had two dates. We didn’t call them dates, but there was an unspoken understanding. We were—are—close family friends. The first time, you came to Seattle, and we went to Cedar’s for Indian food. The next, we lunched at Café on the Ave. You were everything I was looking for: bright, motivated, compassionate, funny. But I was terrified to disrupt the family functions we always shared. I couldn’t justify the risk.
I Witnessed You Witnessing Me, and That Is a Powerful Thing
I met the two of you at a weekend workshop on personal growth and development. On healing with the opposite gender. (I needed it.) The facilitators warned us we might develop feelings. I don’t think I said more than ten words to either of you throughout the weekend. But I witnessed you witnessing me. I accepted you accepting me. And that’s a powerful thing. The contract we signed prohibited the pursuit of romantic relationships between attendees for at least two weeks following the workshop.
Was I that predictable?
We Abandoned Ship
You called me before our first date, and I liked the sound of your voice.
“Hey, Miss Washington! Meet me at the Berkeley B docks!”
That evening, we watched the sunset from your sailboat.
You were passionate about solar panels and scuba, Bernie and boating.
“I want to sail to Central America,” you stated. “Imagine non-monetary abundance.”
“Sign me up,” I said.
Hook. Line. Sinker.
I thought you might be the one.
“I have a feeling about this,” Abby said, when I told her about you.
But then you said you were “all booked up.”
You said, “Maybe another day.”
And when I pressed, you finally told me:
You had become more serious with someone else.
And just like that, we abandoned ship.
