The Project's Birth

In a sense, Becoming Allie began when I did. It has unfolded over time, and continues to unfold as I continue to grow. In another sense, the project began in October of 2019, as I was lounging on the couch with my friend telling stories about dating experiences over cups of nasty tea. She encouraged me to put these stories to paper, to share them with the world. That night, sitting in my bed with my laptop, I made a list of topics and stories to write and easily generated more than 100. The next day, I wrote my very first essay: Unlearning.

I set about creating a website in January of 2020 and published my first posts in February of 2020. Bringing the website to life required patience and persistence. And now there is the task of sharing the deeply personal stories. It is taking courage and deep breaths to let myself be seen in this way. I trust I’ll get better at vulnerability with practice.

What is Becoming Allie?

This project is, first and foremost, for me. The writing process has allowed me to heal from, to express gratitude for, to forgive, to remember, and to honor the people and events that have fundamentally influenced my experience of love. These nonfictional stories are not limited to romantic love, although many of them grapple with it. Currently, the project is a collection of written pieces, but I have considered other media, also: an anthology or book, a podcast, a vlog, etc. My goal is for this space to become a platform. I want to connect with you, to share myself with you. I hope the stories resonate, reduce shame, produce laughter, and promote compassion. I hope they make you feel something.

Other Things to Know

To preserve the privacy and anonymity of the people I discuss in these stories, I use pseudonyms and make small changes to identifying details. Still, I do my very best to maintain the integrity of the described experiences. If you recognize yourself in any of these stories (or suspect you may make an appearance in future stories) and you feel compelled to reach out to me, please do so! My intention is not to cause anyone pain.
